My Notes:

Know your audience and place yourself in their shoes. Listen to what you say through their ears before you say it. Some things can be taken the wrong way and it is vital that we speak with love, humility and genuine concern without fire and brimstone, or condescension.

HCSB Study Bible Notes:

1:13-14 The reference to being rescued and transferred evokes OT imagery of God delivering His people from the grip of hostile oppressors (Ex 6:6; 14:30; Jdg 6:9; 8:34; Ps 18:19; 79:9; 86:14). Believers have been rescued from the realm of Satan's oppression (domain of darkness) by having been transferred to the realm of Christ, which is a kingdom "in the light" (v. 12). The means of this deliverance or exodus was accomplished at their redemption through the forgiveness of sins because of Christ's atoning work (vv. 15-22).

My Notes:

God transfers us from the domain of darkness(our lives as lost sinners controlled by Satan and Sin) and delivers us to the kingdom of Jesus. This is done the moment we ask him into our hearts as our personal savoir. We can come as we are with just enough faith to make that first step towards Him. He is there waiting to receive us and take us from dark to light. After we are saved, with God's help, we can work towards removing the bonds of Sin and Satan's control over our life.
Our preacher illustrated this with his son on stage. He bound him in a chair with masking tape(hands and feet) and blindfolded him. He asked him to stand up as a representation of his faith to make a decision to believe and accept Jesus Christ. Instead of freeing him of the blindfold and bonds...he simply picked him up and transferred him to the other side of the stage(from dark to light). He then slowly helped him remove the blindfold and bindings to show how Christ helps us transform our lives and heal the wounds of our former selves. It takes time and work, but that is after salvation. The hostage needs to be evacuated as quickly as possible, then they can be tended to.

1:9 The opening phrase for this reason harks back to Epaphras's good report about the Colossian believers' faith in Christ. The word filled (the passive verb indicates God as causal agent) typically conveys the sense of "completeness" in Colossians (vv. 9,19,25; 2:9-10; 4:17). Paul asked that they receive full knowledge of His will. The phrase in all wisdom and spiritual understanding expresses the means through which this knowledge comes. This wisdom (v. 28; 2:3,23; 3:16; 4:5) and understanding are spiritual in nature.

1:10-12 The purpose of Paul's prayer was that the believers at Colossae might walk worthy of the Lord so that all their conduct would please Him. Christian behavior that pleases the Lord involves the performance of good deeds; continuous spiritual growth; dependence on His power resulting in endurance, patience, and joy; and expressing gratitude for all things because God enables believers to share in the saints' inheritance.

My Notes:
These verses explain what Paul wants and prays for the believers in Colossae. These are the things that we should be praying for...for ourselves and others. We should, as believers, have a better understanding of our faith and we should ask God to help us to gain this understanding. We do this through prayer and study of His Word.

My prayer:
Lord, help me to understand your will for my life. Help me to have wisdom and understanding of your Word. Help me to know what my beliefs are based on and why I believe in salvation through Jesus Christ . Help me to use this wisdom and understanding to defend my faith and to apply it to my daily life so that others may see the joy and peace that comes only from You.

Good Gaming Day

   Yesterday was a good gaming day for me. The wife and daughter were off to Alabama for a birthday party which left me and my son home alone. We got some small chores done outside in the ridiculous GA heat, then Zane went to play at his nephew's house for awhile. That left me plenty of time for some Borderlands fun. I have been so re-addicted to this game after getting the DLC. All of it is really fun content that really shouldn't be missed. I was lucky enough to get all three for around $10.00 during the Steam summer sale.
   After a couple of hours of play and a refreshing nap, my son wakes me up and wants to play Heroscape again. I was a little unexcited about playing since we have played a few times before using the basic Risk-style rules where it is all basically dice rolls and no excitement. However, we decided to dig into it and use the advanced rules which make the game a litle more involved and much more fun. We got the rules read, got some Long John Silvers fish and chicken(sooo bad for you, but sooo good), got some Red Rock cola(made with cane sugar...better for you & offsets the aforementioned fast food I believe, right?), and got to playing. I came back in the first game to win, but after an hour break of Borderlands, we played again and we had a real close game but he beat me in the end.
   It was past his bedtime at this point, so I got him to bed and was off to play more Borderlands. Before our second game, I had sent out an invite to play some co-op Borderlands. I ended up having a great game until 1:30am with Torchmaster, Cap'n Neon and DevilTurnip. We had an absolute blast with characters around the same level and managed to all level up around 7 levels. This game is a lot of fun single player, but the co-op really adds a missing element of fun.
   It was a good day...got some work done, but mostly played...as a Saturday should be.

This is not my own writing...someone emailed this to me and I thought I should pass it along.

DON'T LEAVE IT ON THE DESK"
There was a certain Professor of Religion named Dr. Christianson, a studious man who taught at a small college in the western United States.

Dr. Christianson taught the required survey course in Christianity at this particular institution. Every student was required to take this course their freshman year, regardless of his or her major.

Although Dr. Christianson tried hard to communicate the essence of the gospel in his class, he found that most of his students looked upon the course as nothing but required drudgery. Despite his best efforts, most students refused to take Christianity seriously.

This year, Dr. Christianson had a special student named Steve. Steve was only a freshman, but was studying with the intent of going onto seminary for the ministry. Steve was popular, he was well liked, and he was an imposing physical specimen. He was now the starting center on the school football team, and was the best student in the professor's class.

One day, Dr. Christianson asked Steve to stay after class so he could talk with him.

"How many push-ups can you do?"

Steve said, "I do about 200 every night."

"200? That's pretty good, Steve," Dr. Christianson said. "Do you think you could do 300?"

Steve replied, "I don't know.... I've never done 300 at a time"

"Do you think you could?" again asked Dr. Christianson.

"Well, I can try," said Steve.

"Can you do 300 in sets of 10? I have a class project in mind and I need you to do about 300 push-ups in sets of ten for this to work. Can you do it? I need you to tell me you can do it," said the professor.

Steve said, "Well... I think I can...yeah, I can do it."

Dr. Christianson said, "Good! I need you to do this on Friday.. Let me explain what I have in mind."

Friday came and Steve got to class early and sat in the front of the room. When class started, the professor pulled out a big box of donuts. No, these weren't the normal kinds of donuts, they were the extra fancy BIG kind, with cream centers and frosting swirls. Everyone was pretty excited it was Friday, the last class of the day, and they were going to get an early start on the weekend with a party in Dr. Christianson's class.

Dr. Christianson went to the first girl in the first row and asked, "Cynthia, do you want to have one of these donuts?"

Cynthia said, "Yes."

Dr. Christianson then turned to Steve and asked, "Steve, would you do ten push-ups so that Cynthia can have a donut?"

"Sure!" Steve jumped down from his desk to do a quick ten. Then Steve again sat in his desk. Dr. Christianson put a donut on Cynthia's desk.

Dr. Christianson then went to Joe, the next person, and asked, "Joe, do you want a donut?"

Joe said, "Yes."
Dr. Christianson asked, "Steve would you do ten push-ups so Joe can have a donut?"

Steve did ten push-ups, Joe got a donut. And so it went, down the first aisle, Steve did ten push-ups for every person before they got their donut.

Walking down the second aisle, Dr. Christianson came to Scott. Scott was on the basketball team, and in as good condition as Steve. He was very popular and never lacking for female companionship.

When the professor asked, "Scott do you want a donut?"

Scott's reply was, "Well, can I do my own push-ups?"

Dr. Christianson said, "No, Steve has to do them."

Then Scott said, "Well, I don't want one then."

Dr.. Christianson shrugged and then turned to Steve and asked, "Steve, would you do ten push-ups so Scott can have a donut he doesn't want?"

With perfect obedience Steve started to do ten push-ups.

Scott said, "HEY! I said I didn't want one!"

Dr. Christianson said, "Look! This is my classroom, my class, my desks, and these are my donuts. Just leave it on the desk if you don't want it." And
he put a donut on Scott's desk.

Now by this time, Steve had begun to slow down a little. He just stayed on the floor between sets because it took too much effort to be getting up and
down. You could start to see a little perspiration coming out around his brow.

Dr. Christianson started down the third row. Now the students were beginning to get a little angry. Dr. Christianson asked Jenny, "Jenny, do you want a
donut?"

Sternly, Jenny said, "No."

Then Dr. Christianson asked Steve, "Steve, would you do ten more push-ups so Jenny can have a donut that she doesn't want?"

Steve did ten....Jenny got a donut.

By now, a growing sense of uneasiness filled the room. The students were beginning to say, "No!" and there were all these uneaten donuts on the desks.

Steve also had to really put forth a lot of extra effort to get these push-ups done for each donut. There began to be a small pool of sweat on
the floor beneath his face, his arms and brow were beginning to get red because of the physical effort involved.

Dr. Christianson asked Robert, who was the most vocal unbeliever in the class, to watch Steve do each push up to make sure he did the full ten push-ups in a set because he couldn't bear to watch all of Steve's work for all of those uneaten donuts. He sent Robert over to where Steve was so Robert count the set and watch Steve closely.

Dr. Christianson started down the fourth row.. During his class, however, some students from other classes had wandered in and sat down on the steps
along the radiators that ran down the sides of the room. When the professor realized this, he did a quick count and saw that now there were 34 students
in the room. He started to worry if Steve would be able to make it.

Dr. Christianson went on to the next person and the next and the next. Near the end of that row, Steve was really having a rough time. He was taking a
lot more time to complete each set.

Steve asked Dr. Christianson, "Do I have to make my nose touch on each one?"

Dr. Christianson thought for a moment, "Well, they're your push-ups. You are in charge now. You can do them any way that you want." And Dr.
Christianson went on.

A few moments later, Jason, a recent transfer student, came to the room and was about to come in when all the students yelled in one voice, "NO! Don't
come in! Stay out!"

Jason didn't know what was going on. Steve picked up his head and said, "No, let him come."

Professor Christianson said, "You realize that if Jason comes in you will have to do ten push-ups for him?"

Steve said, "Yes, let him come in. Give him a donut."

Dr. Christianson said, "Okay, Steve, I'll let you get Jason's out of the way right now. Jason, do you want a donut?"

Jason, new to the room, hardly knew what was going on. "Yes," he said, "give me a donut."

"Steve, will you do ten push-ups so that Jason can have a donut?"

Steve did ten push-ups very slowly and with great effort. Jason, bewildered, was handed a donut and sat down.

Dr Christianson finished the fourth row, and then started on those visitors seated by the heaters. Steve's arms were now shaking with each push-up in a struggle to lift himself against the force of gravity. By this time sweat was profusely dropping off of his face, there was no sound except his heavy
breathing; there was not a dry eye in the room.

The very last two students in the room were two young women, both cheerleaders, and very popular. Dr. Christianson went to Linda, the second to last, and asked, "Linda, do you want a doughnut?"

Linda said, very sadly, "No, thank you."

Professor Christianson quietly asked, "Steve, would you do ten push-ups so that Linda can have a donut she doesn't want?"

Grunting from the effort, Steve did ten very slow push-ups for Linda.

Then Dr. Christianson turned to the last girl, Susan. "Susan, do you want a donut?"

Susan, with tears flowing down her face, began to cry. "Dr. Christianson, why can't I help him?"

Dr Christianson, with tears of his own, said, "No, Steve has to do it alone; I have given him this task and he is in charge of seeing that everyone has an opportunity for a donut whether they want it or not. When I decided to have a party this last day of class, I looked at my grade book. Steve here is the only student with a perfect grade. Everyone else has failed a test, skipped class, or offered me inferior work. Steve told me that in football practice, when a player messes up he must do push-ups. I told Steve that none of you could come to my party unless he paid the price by doing your push-ups. He and I made a deal for your sakes."

"Steve, would you do ten push-ups so Susan can have a donut?"

As Steve very slowly finished his last push-up, with the understanding that he had accomplished all that was required of him, having done 350 push-ups,
his arms buckled beneath him and he fell to the floor.

Dr. Christianson turned to the room and said, "And so it was, that our Savior, Jesus Christ, on the cross, plead to the Father, 'Into thy hands I commend my spirit.' With the understanding that He had done everything that was required of Him, He yielded up His life. And like some of those in this room, many of us leave the gift on the desk, uneaten. "

Two students helped Steve up off the floor and to a seat, physically exhausted, but wearing a thin smile.

"Well done, good and faithful servant," said the professor, adding, "Not all sermons are preached in words."

Turning to his class, the professor said, "My wish is that you might understand and fully comprehend all the riches of grace and mercy that have been given to you through the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He spared not His Only Begotten Son, but gave Him up for us all, for the whole Church, now and forever. Whether or not we choose to accept His gift to us, the price has been paid."

"Wouldn't you be foolish and ungrateful to leave it lying on the desk?"

If any of you have a Logitech wireless mouse, and you have the Logitech Setpoint software installed, you've surely noticed that the Low Battery Warning popup gets annoying, really quick.

It's not very accurate. When it starts reporting my batteries as being "CRITICAL", it means that I have about two weeks of using my mouse left before the mouse starts having communication issues. I'd rather not be forced to buy new batteries every three weeks just to shut up an annoying popup.

I really like the extra buttons on my mouse, so shutting down Setpoint isn't a good option.

Searching the Logitech Forums proved fruitless. Not only is there not a way to turn the blasted thing off, but the programmers seem to have no motivation to program that functionality in.

I decided to take matters into my own hands. After some searching, I found the xml file where Setpoint keeps its language information. I played with the settings a bit, and found a solution.

Browse to your Setpoint program folder. It's probably in Program Files/Logitech/SetPoint

With your favorite text editor (Notepad will work fine), open KEM.xml, and find the following lines:

Your %1's batteries are %2

If you change that line to:

(look at the code fo rthe actual text...don't know how to fix this, don't have time now)

You will find that the popup never rears its ugly head, again. The great thing about this fix is that you can still hover over the tray icon, and see your battery status.

As a side note, if you wish, you can change that text to whatever you would like. I changed it to something more amusing, and found that, although it was still annoying, the popup wasn't nearly as bad if it were cursing at me.

Well...a day late, but close enough. I am not going to make myself any promises about posting more often this year, but we shall see. I finished Baldur's Gate 2 yesterday after many attempts to kill Irenicus. I am now on to the addon and hopefully it won't take me as long to finish that.
I am winding down my (wonderful) 16 day break from work. I have to go back on Monday, but it will be nice to get back to a more regular grind...for a little while I guess.
Hopefully will be meeting Spencer Williams from Control Point today before my family goes to see Sherlock Holmes. He is bringing something to me on his way back from CPCon#3 in Alabama...I wonder what it could be?

Well, I worked from home today due to all of the flooding and resulting traffic problems. I am glad that I brought some work home Monday night for just such an emergency. We have had around 16" of rain over the last few days and flooding got pretty bad all around. Fortunately we are not affected directly by flood waters, but we are under a boil notice and are just getting our water pressure back from last night. It has been dry and sunny most of the day, so hopefully that will help out quite a bit. Keep the folks in bad shape in your prayers.

(note: I am not a writer and tend to ramble, but bear with me and hopefully this can be helpful to someone. The message is the main thing, but any writing criticism is welcome as well.)

"I am a Christian"

Making that statement to someone can bring all sorts of reactions. Some acknowledge the statement from the perspective of "Hey, that's great, me too!" Still others may react with sarcasm or disdainful statements like "Oh...you're one of those types." Fortunately, most are pretty polite about it, even if they are apathetic towards the whole thing. I usually try to simply live my life in a Christian manner and don't just offer the statement up unless it fits the conversation.

These days, Christianity can be synonymous with religion in its negative connotations, which is unfortunate. Christianity is really more about a relationship with Jesus than it is about religion and denomination. Some of the worst portrayal of Christianity is found in the media, as can be expected. Groups like the KKK and Westboro Baptist Church are prime examples of the extremes people go under the name of Christianity. If you are reading this, please...please don't think that things like this represent what we are all about,

I wanted to write this in order to share my faith in Jesus to all who care to read. I want to try and explain why and how I believe and how I try to share this through my life. I am not a "bible-thumper" and would never try to force anyone to believe in God & Jesus. It isn't possible to force anyone to truly believe in anything...you have to prove it to yourself.

I have not lead a perfect life by any means, nor have I always done what I should to "be a Christian." We are all human, and we have all been given free will by God to choose what we believe in and what we do with our lives. God wants us to love Him, and to choose good over evil. He sent his Son to die on the cross so that he would be the ultimate sacrifice for us in our sinful nature.http://www.carm.org/christianity/christian-doctrine/jesus-saves This link gives the basics and is what I believe. I actually hesitated to put this link in because it is stated very matter of fact and serious, which it is. I hesitated, because even though what is said is true, to most it will come across as very harsh and unfeeling/clinical. I urge you to read it and take it to heart though. it is a very serious matter. When I share my faith, I try to explain the same truths, but people have to be talked to in a way they understand, and they have to see the example in how you live your life. Even writing this, I have to stop and think..."does this come across wrong", or "are people going to take this the way I mean?"

I feel like the bottom line is this: where do you want to spend eternity? We all die, and I cannot conceive of non-existence. Therefore, through the evidence of the world and from what I read in the Bible, I see two classic forces at work, good and evil. I certainly want to spend eternity with God in Heaven, rather than with Satan in Hell. Those are the two choices...that is it. I know, this is a product of my upbringing and my faith and some may think it narrow minded, but it makes sense to me. Accepting that Jesus is God's son, that he was sent to die for our salvation, and turning away from your sinful nature, is what will save you from eternal damnation. God asks nothing for this but your faith, love and acceptance.

Once you become a Christian...you will have no more problems and all will be great! Yeah, right. The old cliche' of "Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven" really has a lot of truth to it, even if it can come across as a little condescending. Yes, we are forgiven...but that doesn't mean that we have a free pass. Like I have said before, we are all human and we all make mistakes. Please don't let any one individual's or group's actions or words cause you to have a bad taste about Christianity. It comes down to you and God. Search out the truth yourself, even ask God to reveal Himself to you...he will listen. If you don't know what you believe, or you don't believe and want to challenge God...ask him to reveal His truth to you and I bet you will be surprised. Be willing to know the truth and it will be revealed to you.

OK, I told you that I ramble...sorry. This has been on my mind and I wanted to get it out in some form or another. Those of you that know me, know I am sincere in my beliefs and wish only the best for anyone. Please post comments, I don't really want to debate things as I am not a great debater, but if you have questions you want to ask, feel free and I will try to give you as good of an answer as I can give.

It's back! I made this music video last year and put it up on Vimeo. It stayed up awhile, but then it got deleted because they claim that it is simply game play footage and nothing more. Oh well, their loss ;)

I spent a good bit of time with my friends from Control Point and it was a lot of hard work, but tons o' fun. I think the result is pretty good If I do say so myself...especially for an amature like me.

Back From Dragon Con 2009

I am back from a Saturday at Dragon Con 2009 and as you can see...it was great!

I arrived around 6:15am to get in line for badges. The line really started to grow after that, so it was worth getting up early. Fortunately it is a short 30min drive to downtown Atlanta for me.

I went over to the Walk of Fame early after registration and was lucky enough to get to be first in line to meet Felicia Day. I brought my original copy of Ultima IV from the Commodore 64 for her to sign. She got her name of "Codex" from the game, so she was excited to see that I brought it with me. Felicia was wonderful and I was thrilled to get a picture with her.

Later on I met and chatted with the one and only Wes Wilson of World of WoW & Control Point ;)! It was good to sit and chill for awhile after walking for a good bit of the morning.

After chatting I went and checked out the Art Gallery. I am always amazed and inspired by the incredible art at Dragon Con. I just wish I could discipline my self enough to get more creative.

To finish off the day, I went to Felicia Day's screening and Q&A of The Guild Season 1&2. I got to get a seat on the first row (early again) and got some decent video of the Q&A which I hope to get on YouTube in the near future. The Q&A was awesome and funny...we got some great insight into the show and Felicia herself.

I was able to get some photos of some of the many costumes that folks at Dragon Con are creative enough to fashion, and brave enough to wear in some cases ;) More power to them, I know I couldn't do it.

It was a short stay, but well worth it. Thank you Felicia for deciding to check out Dragon Con this year and we hope you make it back!

By the way...Dragon Con is great for weight loss. I had a Chic-fil-a sandwich, 4 chicken strips and a large sweet tea for lunch and I actually lost 2.5 lbs from all of the walking ;)

Dragon*Con 2009

Well, I am about to head out to Dragon*Con 2009. It is almost 6am and I am going to try and get there early enough to get my ticket at the door without having to wait in a long line. We shall see if I beat the crowd. I am looking forward to meeting Felicia Day. Hopefully she will consider going on the WoWoW podcast with Wes and the crew...that would be pretty cool since she is from Huntsville. I am also looking forward to all of the interesting costumes, gonna take a bunch of photos again.

Ok, on the road time...I will hopefully have some really cool pictures to post later on.

I am constantly having to tell people "No, I did not get my name from South Park!"

I came up with the name from an old children's safety program which I believe was actually called "The Clyde Frog Show"

I recently found a video on YouTube that has a small clip showing a scene or two from the show. There is no audio, but the video is priceless proof of the origins. I am fairly certain that this is where South Park got this from as well, but I have been using it for years before that show came around.

Well, I really should try to post more/write more in this blog. I am so slack when it comes to this type of thing.

I have been playing through Baldur's Gate 2 for the 3rd time since I bought it back in 2000! I haven't completed it...only started it and given up or got too distracted by all of the other games that come out. With the talk of Dragon Age Origins coming out soon, I really wanted to go back and finally complete BG2. It has been a blast, and I have leveled my characters a lot more this time around prior to going into the later chapters. Right now I am working my way through the dark caverns, puzzles and quests of the Underdark. This is also pretty interesting to me since I am also reading the Drizzt series of books.

Good Masking Tutorial

Tutorial: Perfect masking using a highpass

There are several methods to extract/mask objects or persons from the background. But sometimes you need perfect masking that includes for example the hair of a woman. The method i use for this is called highpass. We need to simulate this filter because there is no filter in GIMP that does this for us. The point of the techqnique is that you'll save lots of time for the difficult hair part, because when you do everything right the hair is extracted automatically.

Open any picture that contains a big shot of a person / celebrity / whatever. I use a picture of a well known celebrity.

Duplicate the background layer 2 times, you should that layer 3 times then. On the top layer use Filter / Gaussian Blur: 18px. Set the layer to 50% transparency in the layers dialog.

Then go to Colors / Invert. You should have something similar to my picture now.

Click the right mousebutton on the layer in the layers dialog and choose "Merge down".

Colors / Desaturate (average). The go to Colors / Curves and apply a soft S-curve as seen on the image below.

Then choose Brightness & Contrast from the same menu. This step can vary when you use a diferent picture. We're aiming to get a good clearly vivisble contrast. Its important thyt you get nice contrast in the hairs area.

We're now done with the highpass filtering.

Go to Colors / Invert.

Now you need to take a brush and paint the body of the person / object with white. To make it easier to correct mistakes you should create an empty layer above the highpass-layer and paint on this layer, when done merge the layer down. You can move the background-layer above all layers and set the transparency to 20% or so to see what parts you have to paint.

IMPORTANT
You don't have to paint the hair! Thats the point of this technique / tutorial. The hair should be already white, and everything behind the hair should be dark gray or black so you dont have to use time to get the hair extracted.

When you have the person white you have to paint the background black. Start at the borders of the body. You can do this fast when you first use a smaller black brush to paint around the person (where the gradient from black to white is visible), and then using a very big brush to fill the rest of the background with black.

If you use a sperate layer dont forget to merge it down at the end.

At the end you should have an image containg almost only black an white. We use this as a layer mask now.

Press CTRL+A (Selection / All), copy this using CTRL+C (Edit / Copy). Activate the background where the person is. Click right in the layers dialog, choose Add Alpha channel.

Click right again and add a layer mask. Press CTRL+V (Edit / Paste) then and use the anchor-button in the layers dialog to get the copy onto the layer mask. You should the see the result immideatly. Make a white new layer behind all, then you can see the results even better!

playdemo [demoname] - Plays back a pre-recorded demo of name demoname.dem.

stopdemo - Stops playback of the currently playing demo.

demopause - Pauses playback of the currently playing demo.

demoresume - Resumes playback of the currently paused demo.

listdemo [demoname] - Provides details of the specified demo file.

demo_recordcommands [0,1] - If set to 1, records any commands typed at the console into demo files.

startmovie - Starts recording movie frames, stored in the \Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\[username]\[game name]\[game name]\ directory as .tga files.
